Archipelago Batik

"Indonesia consists of many provinces with different cultures and ethnics which people in each areas have had the tradition to preserve their ethnic costumes adorned with ethnic ornaments. These traditions then influence batik to improve its technique, from the process of dyeing the white fabric to the batik making itself, and of course the patterns"

The milestone of Batik history in Indonesia began in 1955 when the government encouraged all areas outside Java to produce batik. The government wants to push local economy as well as preserving batik as cultural identity inherited by our ancestors.

As we all know, Indonesia consists of many provinces with different cultures and ethnics which people in each areas have had the tradition to preserve their ethnic costumes adorned with ethnic ornaments as one of the prehistoric era heritages. These ornaments made for patterns on their attires worn during the ceremony. Then, these patterns influenced Batik to improve its technique, from the process of dyeing the white fabric to the batik making itself.

The existence of ulos cloth in North Sumatra and the woven fabric in Toraja, Sulawesi and Kalimantan, are part of the religious arts whose the patterns can become the inspiration to create identity batik patterns. (Source : Mozaik Batik Indonesia).
